Background of the Study
Language innovation on social media is reshaping communication practices across Nigeria. Instagram and Facebook, as two of the most widely used platforms, provide fertile ground for the creation and dissemination of new lexical items, syntactic forms, and pragmatic expressions. Nigerian users adapt traditional language forms to the digital context by blending indigenous expressions with global slang and creative abbreviations. On Instagram, visual content and succinct captions encourage inventive language use, while Facebook’s longer posts allow for more detailed and context-rich expressions (Ibrahim, 2023). This study evaluates how language innovation manifests on these platforms by comparing user-generated content and identifying emerging linguistic patterns. It explores the dynamic interplay between digital affordances, cultural identity, and language evolution, thereby offering a comprehensive view of how social media drives linguistic creativity in Nigeria (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian social media is a hotbed of language innovation, there is limited comparative research on how different platforms foster distinct linguistic practices. Current studies often focus on one platform in isolation, neglecting the interplay between visual and textual factors that contribute to language change. This gap restricts our understanding of the mechanisms behind digital language innovation. The study aims to address this by analyzing and comparing linguistic features on Instagram and Facebook, thereby elucidating how platform-specific affordances influence language evolution in Nigeria (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To compare language innovation on Instagram and Facebook.
To identify emerging linguistic patterns in digital posts.
To evaluate the influence of platform affordances on language change.
Research Questions:
What new language forms are emerging on Instagram and Facebook?
How do platform features affect linguistic creativity?
What cultural factors drive these innovations?
Significance of the Study
This study provides critical insights into the role of social media in fostering language innovation in Nigeria. Its findings are beneficial for linguists, educators, and digital communication experts, offering a comparative perspective on how different platforms shape digital language practices (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Language Innovation: The creation of new linguistic forms.
Instagram Posts: Visual content accompanied by captions on Instagram.
Facebook Posts: User-generated content on Facebook.
